Experience the magic of the Scottish isles, the wildlife, nature, culture and people of Mull and Iona. The highlands and islands are simply stunning, and in mid-June with long days to be enjoyed we can maximise our fun and adventure based on the lovely isle of Mull. Start Point: Glasgow Airport 10am Thursday 14th June Join us on our annual midsummer adventure to Scotland where we can revel in those long highland nights. After the northern magic of last year’s visit to the amazing Orkney Isles, our destination is the islands of Mull & Iona. The Hebridean island of Mull became an instant hit when it appeared on the BBC’s Springwatch series, thanks to the brilliant images of its White-tailed eagles, other birds and otters and now it is our turn to enjoy this beautiful and unspoilt island. Our base is Arle Lodge five miles south of the lovely town of Tobermory, once a fishing port and now the quaint, picture-postcard main village of Mull with its pier surrounded by its high, woodland fringed hills. Arle Lodge provides a quiet and isolated location from where we can explore and discover the many wonders of these isles - fine beaches and country walks, drovers trails, moderate hill walks or the challenge of a full on mountain walk to the top of Ben More. After a climb from sea level to the summit at 3,169 feet we take in vistas of the western isles and the mighty mountain ranges of Scotland. Even on this short visit to the Isle of Mull with its blend of mountains, coastline, moorland we are going to discover a wildlife and natural extravaganza. With red dear roaming the hills, seals and otters in bays and inlets and the famous White-tailed eagles soaring high above. All around us the seas of Mull are one of the best points in the UK to spot whales, sharks, dolphins and seals. As during our visit to Orkney we will offer a mix of hard and moderate walks plus short walks and tours that will ensure this mid-summer break is suitable for any reasonably active person. We visit the serene and peaceful island of Iona, with its Abbey which has been the centre of Christian worship for almost 1500 years. It was originally founded by St Columba who landed in AD563 and today the Iona Community continues the Christian tradition. Iona will fascinate and charm, but it is also perfect walking country. Climbing to its highest point, Dun I, behind the abbey affords a panoramic view of Iona, Mull, Tiree and Coll. There is an optional visit to Staffa and, sea conditions permitting, the world famous Fingal’s Cave, and solidified lava flow that legend has it is the Scottish end of the Giant’s Causeway. If you missed them on Orkney you may spot those fascinating and odd looking Puffins here. We might even be able to take in the start of the 100th MacLean’s gathering on 17th June at Duart Castle, one of the most spectacular and unique sites on the west coast of Scotland.. Once again the magic of a Scottish isle beckons, you will not be disappointed. | ||
