Trip Reference:

Enjoy an eight day trip that requires only 4 days off work – thank you Wills! We need a minimum of five persons for it to happen, so do contact me asap if this is of interest.

As on our previous Club Experience trek to Morocco this trek is not technically supported – we participate on the basis of responsible adults as defined in our Club Experience membership information but, as always in our group, we do encourage and support each other.

The costs do not include flights, which need to be booked independently, but these will be co-ordinated as we do need to be in Marrakech to start the trek at the same time. However you can personally add days onto the start and end if you so wish – I have simply chosen the best value flights I could find at the present time with dates and times that fit this trek. You will also need to have adequate insurance cover – with the BMC offering some excellent advice.

The Kingdom of Morocco offers a fascinating insight into an Arabic culture and for us based in the UK offers us relatively easy access to true trekking adventures in the High Atlas. The High Atlas is a stunning mountain range, and the mix of Berber and Arab life offer a unique appeal. Our M’Goun summit trek is challenging and strenuous taking us up the second highest peak in The Atlas Mountains and to the valleys around it. It is an area that is remote and breathtaking in every sense, offering stunning views and spectacular gorges and rivers.

With the assistance of our English speaking guide we will enjoy the culture, the people and a route through high passes and, on day four, our big day out as we and our guide head to the summit of Ighil M’goun where the summit and ridge are likely to have snow and ice (crampons and ice axes necessary on that day).

Itinerary

Day 1 Wednesday  27th April: Arrive in Marrakech with easyJet at 9.20am and travel directly to the High Atlas and our overnight stop in a gîte in the Berber village of Agouti.

Day 2 Thursday 28h April: We meet our guide and mule team and start our first day’s trek of five hours to camp at Ikkis N Arous and experience our first sight of the M’goun Peak.

Day 3 Friday 29th April: After breakfast we will enjoy a full day trek of six hours to the Tarkeddid Plateau from where we can see the Tassaout Gorges and our overnight camp.

Day 4 Saturday 30th April: A very big day – after an early breakfast we climb and summit one of the most famous mountains in North Africa, M’Goun (4,068m), from where we can see views over the Ait Bougmez valley. We will then descent to Oulilmt for an overnight camp and a good night’s sleep after a full 12 hour trekking day.

Day 5 Sunday 1st May: A more relaxed day after yesterday’s exertions as we trek through the Oulilimet valley to Ain Aflafel (a five hour trek).

Day 6 Monday 2nd May: We set off on a seven hour trek to end our adventures and journey in the High atlas at Imelghas.

Day 7 Tuesday 3rd May: After breakfast we return to Marrakech and an overnight hotel stop in the Moulay Said near Jamna el Fnaa square or similar and enjoy the night life of Marrakech.

Day 8 Wednesday 4th May: Transfer from hotel to airport where we catch the 10.00am flight to Gatwick.

THE COST FOR ABOVE TREKKING HOLIDAY IS £485 PER PERSON (Excludes flights)

Includes: Mountain guide, transfers, accommodation B&B (twin rooms) in Moulay Said near Jamna el Fnaa square, gîte accommodation. Full board on trek, mules and muleteers, cook, camping equipment including mattresses.

Does Not Include: Tips for guiding team, dinner and lunch on Marrakech day, sleeping bags, crampons/ice axes (all of which can be hired in Morocco), mineral water, extras.

NOTE: In the unlikely event there is snow still on the mountain tops we will have to trek and summit on a route south of the Mgoun plateau, taking transportation south to Ouarzazate and starting from Boutraghar ascending the southern slopes of M’goun.  This would add £30 to the above costs.

If you are interested in the above do contact me quickly – we need a minimum of five persons for this Club Experience special to happen. No deposit is necessary at the present time (deposit £100 will be due on 1st February 2011 and balance four weeks prior to travel) but we will need to book our flights as quickly as possible as flight costs rise with demand.
